DECEMBER BEANS: DR CONGO NORTH KIVU GORILLA BLEND

$11.00$19.00

Flavor notes: tropical fruit, brown sugar, dark chocolate

For DR Congo farmers, adversity has become commonplace. Disruption from armed incursion, extreme weather and corruption are every day occurrences, but in coffee they see hope. Coffee is one of the only cash crops in this country; it puts money on the table, brings stability to communities and enables farmers to plan. When our importer’s team visited the North Kivu region they were amazed at the quality of the coffee–especially considering the extreme adversity the farmers in this region have experienced. More than anything, they were inspired by the farmers and how coffee represents hope for this community.

The Kawa Kanzururu Cooperative is an exciting new Coop with a network of 24 micro-mills along the western rim of the Rwenzori Mountain Range. The coop borders the Virunga National Park, the oldest national park in Africa and one of the last refuges of the mountain gorilla. The park is investing in initiatives to boost the livelihoods of smallholder farmers who live around the park by investing in the production and marketing of their food and cash crops, including coffee.

In the cup, this wet processed coffee boasts a medium body and a tropical brightness with undertones of sweet brown sugar and chocolate. We hope you love it–and we hope you love knowing how this special batch is making a difference in the lives of this group of farmers!
