Dark Roast

Tasting notes: dark chocolate, citrus, maple, caramel

In Swahili the word “Tamu” means “sweet.” With its sweet, syrupy notes and rich mouthfeel this coffee is appropriately named. It comes from a number of smallholder farmers in the Mt. Kenya region, each of who farm about 150 coffee trees. Mount Kenya is the tallest mountain in Kenya, and the second tallest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro.

The farmers here deliver their just-picked red cherry to cooperative wet mills, which disc pulp, ferment, wash and then sundry the coffee on elevated drying tables.

This lot was the result of our importer’s lab at Taylor Winch (their sister company in Kenya) meticulously blending coffees from estates and coops across Mt Kenya. We love the result: a balanced cup with heavy body, bright acidity and rich tasting notes of dark chocolate, maple syrup, citrus, black currant and caramel.

Medium Roast

Tasting notes: rich chocolate, almond, blackberry, caramel

Huehuetenango is the highest and driest of Guatemala’s non-volcanic regions. This renowned region owes much to the dry, hot winds that come in from the mountains of Mexico’s Tehuantepec plain. The additional heat layers protect Huehuetenango from frost and enable coffee to grow at altitudes of 6,000 feet above sea level. Due to the high altitude, nearly all of Huehuetenango’s producers process their own coffee. Fortunately, the region has rivers and streams in abundance, so mills can be placed almost anywhere. The Huehuetenango growing region is known for producing a sweet, balanced cup, and this organic-certified coffee is comprised of five highly regarded varieties of Arabica — Caturra, Bourbon, Catuai, Typica, Pacamara — netting a nuanced, deep-toned cup with notes of date, almond, baking chocolate, blackberry and caramel. You may even taste some pops of lemon verbana! It has a full, velvety mouthfeel, gentle, round acidity, and a resonant, almondy finish.

Medium Roast

Tasting notes: chocolate, nuts, brown sugar, raisin

Look no further for the perfect decaf coffee! This sweet, chocolaty decaf was sourced from RFA certified smallholders across Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda, which collectively was known as El Viejo Caldas. This lot was decaffeinated in Colombia using an organic compound derived from sugarcane to remove 97% of the caffeine from coffee beans. The process tends to leave a pleasantly sugary flavor.

In the cup, this coffee is balanced, smooth, and crisp. Expect medium body, medium acidity, and tasting notes of chocolate, nuts, brown sugar, and raisin. We roast this one at a perfect medium roast to bring out the best characteristics this coffee has to offer. It makes a great everyday decaf and it’s great for mixing with other coffees (for all the half-caf people out there)!
